Assignment 1 - Question 1

Find two unambiguous (but natural sounding) sentences equivalent to the sentence The man saw the woman with a telescope, the first where the man has the telescope, the second where the woman has the telescope.

My answers:

Looking through the telescope, the man saw the woman.

The man saw the woman who was using a telescope.

    The man saw the woman through a telescope.
    The man saw the woman holding a telescope.

    I don't actually like the result of the first one - it's not as unambiguous as it could be. I just think it's interesting to approach this like an algebra problem, doing it one step at a time.

    (Max again - I'm not sure how to get my google account to stop calling me "unknown.")

    1. Max -- at the bottom of the comment box, do you see a "Reply as:" box? If not, go to the top of the page and see if you are signed in. You need to sign in with your GoogleID to get your name to show up.

  4. That's what was odd to me - I had signed in with my GoogleID, but was labeling me "unknown" anyway. Turned out that I needed to fill in a Blogger profile that was created for me based on my GoogleID.
